► Ethical & Environmental Policy

1. Preface

LSU recognises the impact that its membership and operations have on society and the wider world. As a responsible union, LSU aims to act in an ethical manner and minimise its environmental impact. LSU is committed to the implementation and promotion of sustainable policies which aim to maximise energy efficiency, resource conversation and the recycling of waste.

LSU is committed to full compliance with environmental legislation and will continue to work with LJMU to improve its environmental performance.
Developing and implementing an Ethical and environmental policy is important to LSU for 3 reasons:
1. Emphasising its position as an independent progressive membership led organisation
2. Saving costs and recourses
3. Contributing to real social change

2. Policy Statement

 

LSU will:
2.1 Staff and Student Involvement
· Encourage permanent staff, student staff and student engagement in promoting and implementing ethical and environmental issues.
· Provide an appropriate system for staff and members to contribute to the development programme for improving our environmental performance.
2.2 Energy and Resource Use
· Actively promote energy saving issues amongst staff, officers and users of the Students Union facilities.
· Work with NUSSL’S Carbon Academy project to reduce Carbon Emissions.
· Actively work with LJMU to develop and implement an effective energy saving strategy to reduce consumption, environmental impact as well as cost.
· Use water- saving devices where possible.
2.3 Waste Management
· Develop LSU’s recycling strategy to include all paper, glass, cardboard, cans and bottles, and ensure that the recycling points within the union is promoted amongst staff and students.
· Ensure that waste management is consistent with legal requirements and best practise.
· Minimise waste production.
· Ensure all staff and members are fully aware of their own role in reducing waste.
2.4 Transport
· Regularly servicing and updating all its vehicles.
· Ensure that efficient driving techniques are provided in minibus driving training.
· Advise staff and students on the most sustainable modes of transport available to them, such as cycling, car sharing and public transport.
2.5 Ethical Purchasing
· LSU fully supports NUS services Ltd. Ethical & Environmental Assesment.
· Consider environmental impact whan assessing equipment and products for purchase.
· To support specific environmentally friendly products where possible, e.g One water and recycled paper.
2.6 Fairtrade
LJMU and LSU are committed to promoting, supporting and using Fairtrade, as we understand it is major part of our contribution within the global community.

· Retain Fair Trade status
· Use Fair Trade products at all internal meetings and events.
· Sell and actively promote as many Fair Trade products as is practical through retail outlets.
· Promote the Fair Trade mark in all appropriate LSU publications.
· Consider Fair Trade products first when purchasing.
· Promote Fair Trade in LSU’s media, and in Fair Trade Fortnight.

3. Management and Implementation

Responsibility for the implementation of the Environmental Policy resets with the Executive Committee, and on a day to day basis is delegated to the Chief Executive and Vice President Education.
LSU is dedicated to the maintenance of this policy, and accordingly the following will be done:
· The ethical and Environmental policy, will be reviewed annually by Union Council.
· Ethical and Environmental issues will taken into account when formulating LSU’s strategic Plan
The policy will be promoted to students, permenant and student staff through the following means:
· It will be available online.
· Staff/Employee handbook will include Ethical and Environmental Policy.
· Make all new employees and volunteers aware of the Ethical and Environmental policy, and their role in helping to reduce waste and save energy.
