► Minutes from 8 October 2009

The first Better University Forum took place on the 8 October 2009.

Attendees included a real mixture of students from a range of courses and backgrounds, including Mature students, International Students and Part-time students.

Students at the Better University Forum spent some time getting all of their comments about their education out. These included

• Submission of coursework at the Screen School
• Not being sure who their Course Reps were
• Travel to and from the Screen School
• Lack of tutorials
• Staff not using Blackboard in a way that’s useful for students
• Overpriced food and drink in LJMU canteens, with unsuitable opening hours and no healthy options
• Lecturers sometimes not having great English language skills and confusing students
• Nursing students have no Christmas break this year
• The quality (or even lack of) feedback on of exam and coursework
• Lack of computers and printers in libraries
• Tutors sometimes being unwilling to meet for one-to-one meetings with students
• Timetables not working for students with other commitments and no ability to change them
• Dissemination of information from tutors about the course rep system
• Inconsistent teaching quality across courses
• Lack of funding for furthering education
• Placements too far away from home for nursing students
• Exam location changed to Aintree causing inconvenience
• Organisation of lectures
• Computers removed since refurbishment of Aldham Robarts

We spent some time thinking about what we could prioritise in this list and we’ve produced some quick ‘you said – we did’ feedback. We’ll give some more feedback at the next meeting of the Better University Forum.

YOU SAID WE DID
Travel between the Liverpool Screen School in Wavertree and the main LJMU campus isn’t good enough; students have to come to the City campus to hand in work as well as use facilities because there aren’t enough at the Screen School Jemma Blease-Dudley, the Vice President (Academic Quality) will start a project with LSU’s Better City Forum and James McGarvey, the Vice President (Community Engagement) about the transport situation. We’ll update students at the Screen School as the project starts. We’ll ask the university about subsidising some travel and we’ll ask the City Council about improving public transport for students in general.
Jemma will work with the university librarians to see if the necessary specialist software for the Screen School can be installed on more computers.
Jemma will ask whether an arrangement could be put in place to make handing in coursework easier for Screen School students, so that they don’t have to commute across Liverpool to hand in work
You weren’t sure who your Course Rep is, and some of you said that Course Reps weren’t being given enough information about their role in advance and were sometimes forced to do it after their name was picked out of Jemma is working with the LSU Representation and Democracy department to find ways that all students can access the Course Rep system, part of which will be making your Course Reps more visible and easier to contact.
Jemma will work with LSU’s Representation and Democracy department to make sure that all Course Reps who attend training sessions in October are able to talk to their fellow students about their role.
LSU advises all university staff to support elections, or at least make clear what the role involves so that someone can volunteer. We worked hard to get a policy describing that process through the university: we’ll do more work to ensure that everyone involved in recruiting Course Reps understands what to do.
