► Minutes from 5 November 2009

The forum took place on the 5th November @ LSU Drift Café.

At the forum there was a mixture of new and existing members. We started with an ice breaker to get everyone interacting and communication with each other.

We updated everyone about the issues raised at the first forum (8th October) by using the “You Said, We Did” board. Jemma Dudley (VP Academic Quality) reviewed the comments which were made at last forum and handed out updates as well as talking about the progress made in the following areas;

• Libraries – Jemma asked why there is fewer computers since the refurbishment, once we receive a response from Maxine Melling it will be put on the LSU website.
• Canteen areas – Jemma asking about high prices and opening hours, once we receive a response from Sandra Pickering this will be put on the LSU website.
• Liverpool Screen School - issues raised include coursework submission location, lack of common area and travel options. Meeting has been set up at LSS on Wed 11th Nov to collect student opinions to produce to university.
• Faculty of Health and Applied Social Science – no Christmas break for nursing students – Jemma & Darren McCabe (Representation and democracy coordinator) working with Course rep to resolve this issue.
• Teaching and Learning (including feedback and teaching quality) – awaiting response from Sue Thompson from the learning and development unit
• Funding for PG students – Jemma locating correct department to signpost this issue to.
• Exam Location - Jemma locating correct department to signpost this issue to

We opened the floor for discussion; the students at the forum raised the following topics;

• Publication of December exam dates for Liverpool Screen School – should be going up on LJMU website 9th November 2009
• Multicultural food in LJMU cafes & the use of Credit and Debit cards in LJMU cafes
• Layout of IM Marsh (since introduction of hubs admin offices are behind the scenes so staff can’t see when there is a queue at the desk, this is causing disruptions in the library as it is noisy)
• Shuttle bus service between Hope Street and IM Marsh is irregular.
• International student fees
• Late emails or students not being notified at all about classes being cancelled/moved/lecturers off sick. Issue should be dealt with at faculty level – Course rep issue
• Core and option timetables should be on one, not separate. People missed lectures/tutorials due to them being split – Course Rep issue
• Faster university computers
• Repeated lectures. Doubling up across modules. Three very similar two-hour lectures on one subject: planning. More communication between lecturers needed

As the 1st forum in October raises many issues around feedback, the forum decided this would the main topic of discussion at this meeting. We spoke about the university stance on feedback and what campaigns other unions have run.

Everyone sat in a group and came up with campaign areas. The first thing we discussed was the aims of the campaign, what we wanted to achieve.

From the discussion, we found that students want:
• A set timeframe that must be adhered to, ideally 3-4 weeks
• A set pro-forma (a different pro-forma will be needed for each different assessment type, exam, coursework, essay, presentation etc)
• Definition of what feedback is which can be found on LJMU website and in module and programme handbooks
• Feedback should be typed, or at least legible.

Campaign ideas that students liked:
• Stickers which say “feedback helps me learn” to put on exam papers and coursework when they are submitted.
• Discussions on a Facebook group (to collect evidence of particularly good or bad feedback)
• Online survey e.g. Surveymonkey

The next forum (Christmas themed) is on the Wednesday 2nd December @ LSU Drift Café, 5.30pm. Now it’s your turn to decide how the forum will run. We would like you to send your suggestions for the open agenda discussion to Jemma Dudley lsuvpaq@ljmu.ac.uk It can be anything about your university experience including issues already raised at previous forums.
