12 students attended the forum, 8 of whom have attended previous forums
Ruth Townsend (Chair)
Jemma Blease Dudley (Vice President (Academic Quality))
LSU Staff
Ruth Townsend introduced the Forum and handed out all relevant papers. The students at the forum introduced themselves. Liverpool Students' Union staff supporting the Forum introduced themselves.
Delegate elections
Two candidates were announced for delegate positions: Claire Davis (postgraduate student delegate) and Fernanda Domenghetti (international student delegate). Each candidate had two minutes each to introduce herself to the forum and explain why they wanted to be elected in to the delegate positions. An election was held and both delegates were duly elected.
Strategic Consultation
Jemma Blease-Dudley introduced Liverpool Students' Union's Vision, Values and Strategic Objectives to 2012 and asked the forum to comment on the 'Student Led' Key Performance Indicators.
In response to “we will be experts on our members”, the forum said:
· There should be more variation in data collection methods, not just online surveys.
· Hall Committees and Course Reps should be used to collect data, and this should not be done around exam and coursework deadline times.
· Going Out And Talking to students (GOATing) should be measured in how many people GOATed, not how many hours.
In response to “we create student activists to deliver”, the forum said that these should be focussed around campaigns such as feedback and library services.
In response to “evidence based campaigns make a positive difference to the lives of LJMU students”, the forum said:
· Evidence of what has been done to resolve issues should be displayed around LJMU and improvements should be well advertised
· Perhaps LJMU could liaise with Hall managers to display a “you said, we did” board to demonstrate what has been done within the university, and students could post new questions on there.
· A "You said, we did” board could also be displayed within LJMU – this could also possibly tie in with the GOATing target.
In response to “democratic changes within LSU, LJMU and the city of Liverpool”, the forum said:
· Students should be encouraged to vote in local elections, as they can vote twice - both in their home town and Liverpool (unless their home town IS Liverpool)
· On the other hand, Liverpool City Council does nothing to encourage students to vote. The Council ignores requests made by students about particular issues (e.g. student parking around Marybone – there is none). They should do more to promote elections to students, perhaps they could work alongside LSU to do this.
In response to “LSU good neighbours’ scheme”, the forum said that more interaction with the community is needed.
General comments on the Strategic Objectives included:
· Too many acronyms are used – perhaps these could be removed, or at least a glossary of terms
· In regards to NSS results, it is felt that students are encouraged to complete the NSS survey to improve the university’s position in the league tables, whereas LJMU should be using the results to improve the student experience for future students. It should also be demonstrated where LJMU’s strengths are compared to other institutions.
· Annual impact assessment should be available for all to see, should they want to
Break and consultation on feedback
Whilst eating, the attendees were presented with NUS’ Principles of Good Feedback:10 ideal statements that they have made about what makes high quality feedback. They answered whether they currently have it, or want it on their own work and suggested that they would like to see a future forum focus on this.
Report from the Vice President (Academic Quality)
Jemma Blease-Dudley gave a minute report of her activities. She explained the progress achieved on issues that had been raised at previous Better University Fora. The lengthy responses that Jemma has received from the university about teaching quality have been posted on the LSU website but, in summary of progress:
· Catering quality issues: Jemma will speak to VC’s office
· Liverpool Screen School
o The Dean of the faculty is happy for coursework to be submitted at LSS rather than in Aldham Robarts if that is what students would prefer
o Exam date release is same across whole university
o Transport issues being worked on alongside LJMU, Better City Forum and Mersey Travel
· Funding issues for postgraduate students has had no response yet
· A response about the location of exams has been posted on the LSU website
· The Representation and Democracy Department is working on issues about transport to I M Marsh campushuttle bus to IM Marsh but theUniversity are currently stating that it has the right to withdraw the service at any time
· LSU is currently identifying the correct person to ask about institutional timetabling
Issues from the floor
The forum raised more issues, including:
· LJMU canteen areas are overpriced, with little choice, poor quality food and café areas are too small! The service is high quality though!
· Aldham Robarts LRC
o so many computers are out of order: when will they be repaired? They are needed around this time with exams and coursework deadlines approaching
o many computers are used to check Facebook and not working – students are able to reserve a computer. Can anything be done about this
· Security in Avril Robarts LRC – external doors (back door near canteen and entrance under stairs) are always open for anyone to walk in. What can be done about this?
Next meeting
The forum discussed action planning on feedback. Attendees will bring good and bad examples of the feedback they have received to the next forum for further work.
