Nippon Kempo Club

Nippon Kempo is a competitive combat sport that originated in Japan by Muneumi Sawayama in 1932 while an undergraduate at Kansai University. He was born into a family which was descended from a samurai family of the nakaoka clan.

How did Nippon Kempo begin?

Sawayama's martial arts training started with Judo at junior high school. At Kansai University he practised both Karate and Judo. It was the simultaneous practice of multiple martial art forms that inspired him to realise the effectiveness of combining various forms.

Until he passed away on 27th September 1977 at the age of 72, he dedicated his life to developing the combination of techniques which we know today as Nippon Kempo and the compilation of the Nippon Kempo Handbook.

The origins of Nippon Kempo in England can be traced to 1977. In 1977 Luther De Gale spent a year at Kansai Foreign Language University studying Japanese. While at the University he trained and obtained a Nippon Kempo 1st Dan Black Belt. Before returning to England, the chairman of the Japanese Nippon Kempo association, Fumio Yano (10th Dan) asked Luther to set up Nippon Kempo in England as a base for it's proliferation into Europe. For this task he appointed Luther De Gale his official representative in Europe and granted to award Nippon Kempo belts

Liverpool Nippon Kempo

The Liverpool Nippon Kempo Club was founded in 1980 by Hamilton De Gale. Hamilton spent many years of passionate training with his brother and UK Nippon Kempo founder member Luther De Gale in their home town of London. With the need to spread and introduce Nippon Kempo to other areas of the UK, Hamilton found home in Liverpool. Initial training sessions were held in local community halls in Toxteth where the martial art gained many faithful members.

In 1983, the club moved into the Liverpool polytechnic Students Union, which later became Liverpool John Moores University Students Union. The club continued to grow ever stronger thanks to member dedication and university grants. Liverpool Nippon Kempo Club became a hit with both students and local residents alike. The club has continued to capture the interests of people and boasts a strong and healthy membership.

Regular training sessions take place each week and are not only concerned with the physical combat element but calls on you to have respect, loyalty, integrity and responsibility. There is no end to the learning process and no sparring will take place until you have mastered the basics and are physically robust enough for Nippon Kempo combat. Basics include kicking, punching and wrestling. Body armour is worn for protection.
