City Centre Surgeries & Other Useful Information

Students living closer to, and within the city centre have a number of choices. Dr Barnett and Partners will take on students from post-codes L1, L3, L7, L8, L15, L16, L17, L18, L19. Student Medical Services staff can give assistance with queries on bundaries. Registered patients who move outside the exact boundaries will be seen, providing they are living within the L1, L2, L3, L6, L13, L15, L16 post codes.

Students living in the city centre can also register with the following GPs: Dr Soin & Dr Chan, Marybone Health Centre; Dr Gaynor and Partners, 70 Pembroke Place; Dr Malpas and Partners, Great Charlotte Street; and Dr Satchi & Dr Prasad, 29 Great George Square.

OPTICIANS

To get an eye test, glasses or other related treatment, you will need to see an optician. An eye test costs, from 1st April 2005, £18.39, and the price of frames and lenses varies widely. There are plenty of opticians in Liverpool, so shop around for the best deal.

DENTISTS

If you are registering with a new dentist, check if they are willing to provide treatment under the NHS system. Dentists are now allowed to accept or refuse patients and provide private treatment only. Again charges tend to vary at different practices. A searchable database of dentists can be found at www.nhs.uk

Limited free treatment is available from Liverpool Dental Hospital Monday-Friday 8.30-5.30.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

If you suspect symptoms relating to sexually transmitted diseases or if you have any doubts or worries, go to your Doctor or the special STD clinic. This is located at the Royal Liverpool Hospital in the Genito-Urinary Clinic, telephone 0151 706 2621 for drop in times. Your enquiry at the clinic will remain completely confidential.

Look out for LSU campaigns on health and safe sex throughout the year.

MARYBONE HEALTH CENTRE

A health centre for all you Northern Campus Students!

This is a doctor's surgery and pharmacy combined which is funded by Central Liverpool Primary Care Trust. It is located in 2 Vauxhall Road opposite Avril Robarts Centre.

It has been set especially because of reported demand by local residents and students to meet local needs. The surgery offers the usual GP services for REGISTERED patients which currently include students from local halls of residence. The surgery is open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm (Thursday 9am to noon).

The pharmacy offers additional services as below. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to noon and 4pm to 6.30pm. Booked appointments can be made between noon and 4pm.

Smoking Cessation advice and booked consultations with subsidised Nicotine Replacement if appropriate.

Care in the Chemist which allows subsidised supply of over the counter medicines for minor ailments to eligible residents.

Contraception advice and subsidised Emergency Hormonal Contraception supply where appropriate
