Do you remember almost a year ago (or for some of you even longer!) when you arrived as a first year at Liverpool John Moores - everything was new, many things were strange and you probably did not know a soul. You may also have moved away from home for the first time into an unknown city which is a daunting experience in itself.
Whatever your experience during Freshers Fortnight we're sure that there were a few problems that you could have done without.
Your Students' Union has come up with an idea to help first years settle in quicker and easier with as few hassles as possible. This is where you come in.
We are looking for willing students to help the first years during this coming Freshers Fortnight, September 2007. These will be called Freshers Angels.
This will be a lot of fun, and is also a good CV opportunity for you. Remember that a degree is not enough these days and your Union is committed to giving you every opportunity through training & development programmes to develop your skills and enhance your future.
Becoming an Angel is a voluntary position but you will have the opportunity to be rota'd into paid jobs too. These include helping out at Freshers Fair, promotion in the Union, and other necessary tasks to make Freshers Week work. You will be given priority to these jobs during the Freshers Fortnight because of your work as an Angel.
To explain further, you will be called a "Freshers Angel"and will basically be a mobile information point. First years will be told through their summer mailing to find an Angel if they need help. Angels will give them directions, information, help them out or just have a chat if they feel lonely. The Angels will be stationed in specific locations (for example accommodation & common rooms). Groups of Angels will be around all day and at night during events, specifically helping and talking to first years.
"Whatever your experience during Fresher's Fortnight we are sure that there were a few problems that you could have done without."
Now imagine what you would have felt like if you had Freshers Angels to help you last year! You would have been able to ask questions, ask directions, find out what's going on or just have a chat to a student who has been at college for a while. Think about how the first years will feel when they arrive in September. Now think about how they will feel knowing that people like you are specifically there to help them.
You will be trained in early September ready to be an Angel from Freshers Week onwards. You will be trained in:-
• the purpose of Freshers Angels
• assertiveness
• crisis management
• managing yourself as the face of your Union
• where to send people if they need further help
• details of events and activities taking place
You will be given a certificate to prove that you have received the above training.
You can be an Angel at the site of your choice , but it is best to be at the one that you study at as you know the area and understand what it is like to study there. You can choose exactly when you want to work but not exactly where on your site as a lot of areas need to be covered.
This will depend upon how many Angels are interested and the hours you are able to spare. The sums have been worked out so far that each Angel will work every other day during Fresher's Week for around 10 hours in total (or 2 and a half hours every day).
As well as the warm glow you'll feel from being the first friendly face a new student meets we will feed you on the days that you work and will give you a uniform of sorts so that you can be identified. You will also have free entry to some events during the Fresher's Fortnight.
