What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a condition or learning difficulty, which causes difficulty with reading and writing. It also constitutes a Special Education Need as defined by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act, 2001.

Many students come to University unaware that they have Dyslexia. LJMU and LSU are at hand to give advice and guidance to any student that believes they may have dyslexia.

What are the Signs of Dyslexia?

  • Reading hesitantly
  • Difficultly with sentences (such as was for saw of 53 for 35)
  • Erratic spelling
  • Repetition of phrases and words
  • Confusion of letters and numbers of similar shape (such as b/d 6/9 W/M)
  • Difficultly in pronunciation particularly with multi - syllabic words
  • Shortening of words (such as rember for remember)
  • Difficulty with copying of OHP's
  •

Steps to follow if you think you have Dyslexia

1.    Notify your Lecturer/Tutor.

2.    Arrange an appointment with a University Welfare Advisor
        Call 0151 231 3315  or email disability@livjm.ac.uk

3.    Formal Assessment - costs will be covered by the University

4.    Additional Support from LJMU and LSU

  • Extra time in Examinations
  • Laptop provision
  • Tutorials
  • LRC support such as extensions on borrowing times, free photocopying, keyboard or screen magnification and Kurzweil read/scan systems.
  • Proof reader and scribe
  • Depending on the outcome of your assessment, you may be eligible to apply for the Disability Students allowance (DSA) from your Local Education Authority (LEA).
